| PARIS: France is rife with speculation - hotly denied - that the former president Nicolas Sarkozy plans to set up an £800 million ($1.2 billion) private equity fund in London.
Mr Sarkozy, who left office in June, has been using his new job as a highly paid international conference speaker to try to stump up capital for the new venture, the respected investigative website Mediapart reported on Tuesday.
The move would make the 57-year-old right-winger the latest high-profile figure to circumvent tax rises introduced by his Socialist successor, Francois Hollande. These include a capital gains tax of more than 60 per cent on stocks, bonds and company sales - with some exceptions - and, most controversially, a 75 per cent levy on earnings above €1 million ($1.26 million).
