| Subject: Speed not the big killer; Why the OZschwitz government's slow-down mantra is flawed Fri Dec 21, 2012 1:39 am | |
| It's that time of year again, when millions of Australians hit the road for their Christmas break. It's also the time when road fatalities make headline news, despite long-term stats showing there is no discernible difference in the road toll in holiday times.
It's also the time we'll see the predictable interviews with emergency services people (doing an often heartbreaking job) pleading with people to slow down.
Yet the vast majority of crashes occur at or below the speed limit. And, indeed, there are no statistics on how many crashes are caused by speeding (the type of speeding that involves exceeding the speed limit, not the one police and road safety authorities define as speeding in order to inflate the statistics).
