| The majority of pregnant women surveyed in a West Australian study were found to have a chemical in their urine that is believed to cause behavioural issues in children.
The first Australian research on the existence of Bisphenol A, a chemical commonly found in plastic bottles and tin cans, in the human body found that 84 per cent of pregnant women surveyed had detectable amounts of the chemical in their urine.
The results, compiled by Edith Cowan University researchers and headed by Dr Anna Callan in 2011, were recently published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health.
She said the sample size of just 26 women was not large enough for the results to reach statistical significance but that these initial results showed a need for further research into the matter.
