The state's new veterans' cemetery participated in the national Wreaths Across America event today.

The ceremony took place at noon at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar. It is the first time this cemetery, which opened earlier this year, has participated in the event.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin noted the holidays can be a tough time for those who have lost loved ones.

"The holiday season can be a difficult time, and this is a great way to remind our military families that we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers," Tomblin said.

Wreaths Across America Day is intended to honor veterans during the holiday season by remembering their sacrifices and teaching younger generations about the costs of freedom. The ceremony included local color guards, guest speakers and the placing of seven wreaths specifically designated for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and POW/MIA. Similar ceremonies took place simultaneously at more than 750 other participating locations throughout the country.

It is estimated that more than 400,000 wreaths will be placed nationwide this year as part of the Wreaths Across America mission to remember, honor and teach. More than 60 wreaths have been donated by local residents and were laid at the memorial veterans cemetery.
