| A Sydney council has turned down a developer's offer of $5 million cash in exchange for approving an extra 10 storeys on a controversial high-rise building.
Marrickville Council Tuesday night voted unanimously against entering into negotiations with Meriton after the developer's offered the council cash for permission to pack more storeys onto its controversial Lewisham Towers development.
"Everyone felt that there were enough [storeys] there already," said the Mayor of Marrickville, the independent Cr Victor Macri.
Past proposals for building on the site on Old Canterbury Road have angered residents concerned about over-development, including a 2009 plan for a 14-storey tower. Advertisement
A 10-storey plan was approved earlier this year.
