After the events of last week’s election, some people apparently want out.
Residents of 22 states, including North Dakota, had filed petitions on the White House’s official petitions website seeking permission to secede from the United States, as of Monday afternoon.
Most, including the North Dakota petition, appear to be cookie cutters of one another, asking the OK from President Barack Obama’s administration to withdraw peacefully and form a new government. Most do not give specific reasons, instead quoting the Declaration of Independence.
The North Dakota petition, which has about 4,300 electronic signatures, follows that template. It was created by someone identified only as “C R” from Grand Forks. Signers do not have to give their full names.
The vast majority of the signatures appear to be from out of state, and many of the same names appear on similar petitions for other states.
Sixteen of the states with petitions up voted against Obama in last week’s election, though a few, like Oregon, New York and New Jersey, were firmly in the president’s column.
The petition site currently has 70 publicly visible petitions seeking action on a wide range of topics.
Some address relatively mainstream causes, like drone strikes, the legalization of marijuana and the labeling of genetically modified food.
Others are far more off the beaten path, like the regulation of premium cigars and calls for the release of political prisoners in Macedonia.
Petitions are nonbinding, but those that gather enough signatures – typically 25,000 within 30 days – get responses from the administration. In recent months, those have ranged from policy statements on certain issues to the release of the White House beer recipe.
Of the current secession petitions, only one, from Texas, has gathered enough signatures to qualify.

U.S. Secession Petitions Now Collecting Signatures in 34 States
The sting of President Obama’s re-election has driven some of most disillusioned to the White House’s We the People petition forum with a steep demand: That their state be allowed to secede from the union. And the minimovement is now going national.
Disgruntled voters in 34 states have filed the petitions, mainly in states Obama lost but also in several he won, including Florida and Nevada.
But it’s the petition from Texas that has garnered the most attention: With 60,000 names attached, it’s well past the 25,000-signature threshold that usually warrants an official response from the Obama administration. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has weighed in, saying he doesn’t support the petition, even though he erroneously suggested in 2009 that Texas can leave the union if it chooses.
Not to be outdone, Obama supporters filed a counter petition with We the People, calling for secession supporters to be exiled from the United States.

What began as a small group of citizens voicing their disappointment with President Barack Obama's victory in last week's presidential election, has turned into a plea from hundreds of thousands of citizens to have their states be granted independence from the federal government.
The White House has now received secession petitions from all 50 states by citizens requesting that the administration "peacefully grant" them the opportunity to form their own sovereign government.
The petitions are created through the Obama administration's 'We The People' initiative, which launched in 2011 as an effort to give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard by the administration.
To appear on the website, a petition must first receive more than 150 signatures. For the petition to be granted a response from the White House, it must receive at least 25,000 signatures. Advertisement
Currently, six secession petitions have reached that threshold from Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and Texas. The petition from Texas has more than 100,000 signatures—although according to another petition, it seems that 5,000 people in Austin would like to be granted independence from the state of Texas while remaining part of the United States.
