| THE International Olympic Committee has toughened its interpretation of the Olympic Charter, informing potential Beijing Games athletes that their actions, reactions and attitudes will be scrutinised at the coming Olympics - right down to their appearance, clothing, gestures and any written and oral statements.
Australia's leading cyclist and the Herald's 2007 sports performer of the year, Cadel Evans, has already publicly aired his views, wearing a "Free Tibet" T-shirt while he competed in last month's Liege-Bastogne-Liege race in Belgium. But other top Australian athletes, including swimmer Craig Stevens and softballer Natalie Ward, say they are unaware of any of their Olympic teammates planning to make protest statements in Beijing.
For the first time since the famous Black Power salute at the 1968 Mexico Games, the IOC has found it necessary to elaborate on Rule 51.3 of the Olympic Charter in a letter to all National Olympic Committees. But the wide-ranging interpretation, issued less than 100 days before the Beijing Games, has put the IOC in potential conflict with the Australian Olympic Committee. It also comes as the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua, announced that tough rules allowing for random, unannounced searches of individuals in Tiananmen Square had been imposed. "Police will be on the lookout for explosives, poisonous and radioactive articles, guns, knives, drugs and other items that pose risks to social order and public security," Xinhua reported.
