| Four San Francisco supervisors voted Tuesday night to reinstate a sheriff who will spend most of his term on probation for his conviction of a false imprisonment criminal charge in connection with domestic violence.
Shame on them.
It really doesn't matter how much Supervisors Christina Olague, David Campos, Jane Kim and John Avalos prefaced their support for the reinstatement of Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi with their concern for domestic violence or their abhorrence for his treatment of his wife Eliana Lopez. It really doesn't matter how much they tried to distance themselves from the comments of certain Mirkarimi supporters who called the abuse "a private matter" or no big deal.
Their actions - their votes - were the bottom line: Mirkarimi, elected to uphold the law in one of the most sensitive and powerful jobs in law enforcement, was given a pass on a serious crime.
As the majority of supervisors concluded, the sheriff should be held to a high standard, especially in a city that had been in the forefront of recognizing the significance of domestic violence.
