THE former mayor of Griffith sexually assaulted one woman and molested another while working as a parole officer, telling the women, ''I'm the only one who can keep you out of jail'', a court has heard.

Michael Neville, a paraplegic who held the position of mayor for an extended period, is on trial in the NSW District Court on eight charges, including multiple counts of sexual assault and assault with an act of indecency.

In his opening address to the jury yesterday, the Crown prosecutor, Adrian Robertson, said that in each case Mr Neville had been responsible for preparing pre-sentencing reports for the women after they had committed offences, and thus had power over them.
