| Peugeot Australia's on-again, off-again love affair with diesel-electric hybrid technology has been squashed for the foreseeable future by the importer's head office.
As recently as four months ago, firm plans were in place to bring what would be Australia's first diesel-electric car, the 508RXH, to Australia in time to be shown at the Sydney motor show in October.
The company has also been pursuing a compact SUV with the same powertrain, the 3008 HY4, for more than two years and both cars were expected to join the local line-up in 2013.
Peugeot Australia managing director Bill Gillespie says the international program for the two cars has been shelved to concentrate all of the company's research and development resources on a wave of new cars that begins rolling out this week with the new 208 light car and continues through 2013 and beyond. "It's a decision out of Europe," Gillespie says. "There's only so much engineering investment you can make, and there's a whole raft of new cars coming next year and in 2014 so you can't do everything.
