THE latest blasphemy crisis in Pakistan - in which a young Christian girl appears to have been framed for allegedly burning Koranic verses - is masking renewed convulsion in the country's Muslim community, with hundreds of minority Shiites being murdered by Sunni militias.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch says more than 320 Shiites have been victims of targeted killings across the country this year, locking Pakistan into its iteration of the sectarian violence that shredded post-Saddam Iraq and which has taken hold in the Syria conflict.

''These attacks are escalating across Pakistan,'' said Human Rights Watch's Asia director, Brad Adams. ''The government's persistent failure to apprehend attackers or to prosecute the extremist groups organising the attacks suggests that it is indifferent to the carnage.''
