A Canberra man convicted of sending letter bombs through the mail has won compensation for depression he suffered while working in the federal public service.

Colin Dunstan was jailed for mailing bombs to 28 public servants in 1998.

One of the bombs exploded at a Canberra mail centre, injuring a worker.

Dunstan was sentenced to nine years jail and released in 2008.

The letter bomb campaign came after a long running dispute with his employer the Australian Tax Office when he suffered depression.

Dunstan has fought a long battle for compensation, claiming he was harassed by a colleague with whom he had had an affair .

This week the Administrative Appeal Tribunal found Dunstan's employment with the Commonwealth had contributed to his depression.
It found he was entitled to compensation and ordered Comcare to calculate the amount.
