| A SYDNEY paediatrician has escaped deregistration over a long affair with the mother of two children he was treating in a judgment slammed as inadequate by the NSW opposition's health spokesman.
In the Medical Tribunal's first disciplinary action concerning a doctor's relationship with a patient's relative, Antony Underwood instead received a reprimand and an order that he should continue to see a psychiatrist and a senior doctor mentor to discuss his practice.
The tribunal found Dr Underwood, who is married with four children, had gained ''an excess of emotional gratification from his role as the particularly caring doctor to vulnerable children'', and this weakness had led him to engage in the four-year affair, which amounted to professional misconduct.
