The ALP's national secretary, George Wright, has called on Tony Abbott to insist the Country Liberal Party NT immediately withdraw its new election television commercial, which contains crude personal abuse against Labor's NT leader, Paul Henderson.

The advertisement features an optometrist's eye chart with the following letters running from top to bottom: H-EN-DOI-SAJE-RKOFF. There's nothing wrong with that - except that when one reads it in full, it spells out ''Hendo is a jerk off''.

Wright said the Liberal advertisement reached a new low in negativity and personally abusive attacks.

''Mr Abbott launched the CLP campaign that this commercial is part of. He has made a big deal of his close association with the CLP campaign in the NT, so we can only assume he supports this type of negative personal abuse," he said
