In a nod to its past McLaren has unveiled the fastest version yet of its MP4-12C supercar – the 12C Can-Am Edition.

Named after the American racing series that company founder Bruce McLaren and fellow Kiwi Denny Hulme dominated in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, the car is a concept developed for the annual Pebble Beach concourse in the United States.

The engine has been tuned to produce 470kW (29kW up on the road going version and 102kW up on the GT3 version).

Bigger carbon fibre front and rear wings improve downforce by 30 per cent and there are upgraded brakes and Pirelli racing tyres. Weight has been cut to just 1200kg.

The interior is pure track car with a pair of racing seats and a steering wheel based on Lewis Hamilton’s formula one model.
