| July of 2012 was the hottest month in the 118 years of American history in which the federal government has been keeping records, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The average temperature for the month, in which much of the Midwest and Great Plains baked in 100 degree-plus heat, was 3.3 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average for the 20th Century, and .2 degrees hotter than the previous record set in July of 1936.
The previous record was set in the midst of the Dust Bowl years.
