A young man has been charged with assault, after allegedly jamming a police officer’s fingers in his car window and driving over his foot in Dickson last night.

Police say officers pulled over the 20-year-old Franklin man driving at about 11.50pm on Northbourne Avenue last night, after his Toyota Camry was allegedly clocked doing 88km per hour in a 60km zone.

The police officer was attempting to hand the driver a speeding ticket, when he allegedly wound up the window unexpectedly and jammed the officer’s fingers.

It's alleged the driver released the officer’s fingers and started to drive away, running over the officer’s left foot.

The officer then smashed the driver’s window with his baton, reached in and turned off the ignition.

The man was arrested and taken to City Police Station.

He has been charged with assault and a series of traffic offences, and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on August 2.
