Penalties for drink driving will be immediate as of next month.

From August 1, police will have the power to immediately disqualify a person's driver's licence when they drink and drive.

Previously drivers were charged and summonsed to court at a later date where disqualifications could be imposed.

Commander Michelle Fyfe said the new procedure applied to the drink driving offences -

Excess 0.08
Driving under the influence or in excess of 0.15
Failure to comply with the police requests to provide a sample of blood or breath for analysis

"As soon as a driver is personally handed the disqualification notice by a WA police officer, the disqualification commences and lasts for two months, all other drink driving penalties still apply," she said.
