| Hundreds of people have lined Sarajevo's main street as trucks bearing 520 coffins passed on their way to Srebrenica, where the newly identified victims of Europe's worst massacre since World War II will be buried.
Whispered Muslim prayers grew louder and mixed with sobbing when the three trucks appeared. The weeping crowd tucked flowers into canvas covering the trucks as they drove down a street sprinkled with ceremonial rose water.
Many stood silently praying in front of the trucks. Others caressed the yellow canvas covering the coffins. ''Uncover them!'' demanded Ajkuna Muhic. ''Let me see him. Oh, my son.''
Her son and husband were found in mass graves around Srebrenica that Serb forces dug to hide evidence of their mass execution of the city's men and boys in July 1995. She will bury both on Wednesday. Advertisement
The Muslim Bosniak town was under United Nations protection when Serbs overran it.
The 520 sets of remains, identified through DNA tests, will be buried at a memorial near Srebrenica on the 17th anniversary of the massacre of 8000 men and boys, defined by the International Court of Justice as genocide.
So far 5137 victims have been laid to rest after their remains were identified.
Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and Bosnian Serb army general Ratko Mladic are on trial at the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.
Mladic, once dubbed the ''Butcher of Bosnia'', was arrested in hiding last year. He denies 11 charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
This week he came face to face with a Bosnian man who gave harrowing testimony of the slaughter in his village in the summer of 1992.
During two hours of gripping evidence, Elvedin Pasic, 34, recalled the early days of the ethnic war in Bosnia-Herzegovina that would claim 100,000 lives and leave 2.2 million people homeless.
He sat just metres from Mladic, who showed none of the bombast and cynicism he displayed when his trial opened two months ago, when he made a throat-slitting gesture at a Bosnian survivor in the public gallery.
Mr Pasic said that after his Muslim village of Hrvacani was shelled by Serbs, he and his mother wandered for weeks with relatives and neighbours. They circled back to Hrvacani despite two Serb soldiers warning: ''There is nothing for you to go back to - your home is Turkey, this is Serbia.''
Mr Pasic raced to his family's house, only to find it stripped and burned.
In one house they found the burned bodies of five elderly people who they knew had either refused to leave or had been incapable of leaving.
Mr Pasic's father is believed to have been executed with about 150 others.
