| Audrey Pulido did not hesitate last week when a waitress in a restaurant neighbouring her bicycle shop in Guadalupe, Arizona, asked her if she would care for her five-year-old son should the police take her away.
“I feel sorry for her, it's really sad. I did not even have to think about it, I just said yes,” said the 42-year-old mother of three.
The waitress, an undocumented immigrant who Mrs Pulido chose not to name, was fearful that she might deported without notice should police take her in under Arizona's tough anti-immigration laws. Advertisement: Story continues below
Early this morning, Australian time, the US Supreme Court upheld the most controversial element of the legislation, while overturning three other parts by declaring that immigration remains a federal, rather than state, responsibility.
In an opinion by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the country's highest court by an 8-0 vote upheld the part of the law requiring police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop for any reason.
But in a split verdict, the justices also ruled that the three other provisions that were challenged in court by the Obama administration went too far.
