| Even dogs and cats at the RSPCA in Weston will suffer under the carbon tax, according to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and the RSPCA.
Mr Abbott visited the RSPCA's animal shelter at Weston as part of his campaign against the tax which begins next week.
ACT RSPCA chief Michael Linke said increased electricity and waste charges linked to the tax would cost the charity between $5,000 to $10,000 in the ACT and $180,000 nationally. Advertisement: Story continues below
"As you can imagine we've got significant waste and we use significant electricity," Mr Linke said.
"We're a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour-a-day business. We've got heated kennels, heated beds for cats and dogs in care, hotboxes for wild animals in care significant electricity costs."
Mr Linke said the RSPCA did not have a policy position on the desirability of a carbon tax, but wanted to ensure charities did not suffer as a result of the levy on large polluters.
"I think the broader question is that this is potentially an erosion of services across charities, across the country. You're looking at millions of dollars across the country," he said.
Climate Change Minister Greg Combet later said that the Government valued the work of the not for profit sector and charities and community groups around the country will be supported as we move to a clean energy future.
“Our Low Carbon Communities program, which is worth more than $300 million, is providing grants for community organisations and local councils to reduce their energy use by retrofitting or upgrading their buildings and facilities,’’ Mr Combet said in a statement.
