A 59-year-old man has had his car impounded after he was allegedly caught driving at 197km/h while under the influence of alcohol.

Police spokesman Sam Dinnison said Waroona police were carrying out speed checks on the Forrest Highway just after 8.30pm when they noticed a vehicle overtaking another car at high speed.

"The radar locked on and detected the Dodge Avenger travelling at 197 kilometres, which is 87 over the limit," Mr Dinnison told 6PR.

Police stopped the car and subjected the driver to a breath test. It will be alleged he was over twice the legal alcohol limit.

The man will be charged by summons with reckless driving and driving with a blood alcohol limit in excess of 0.08.
