A 33-year-old man who was caught having sex with a 14-year-old girl says he was in love with the teen, Whanganui District Court has heard.

Malcolm Ian Barron was charged with having a sexual connection with a young person after he was caught twice having sex with the girl in May and June in 2011.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months' home detention and ordered not to have contact with the girl without consent from a judge, the Whanganui Chronicle reported.

Crown lawyer Jo Woodcock said Barron admitted having a relationship with the girl and that he loved her.

The teen did not consider herself a victim, Ms Woodcock says.

The pair were first spotted kissing by a family member in December 2010.

Barron's lawyer Stephen Ross said Barron did not abuse, manipulate or groom the girl who did not give a victim impact statement.

Although Barron has a criminal history spanning 1996-2011 he has no previous convictions for sexual offences.

In sentencing Judge David Cameron said it was an aggravating feature that the offending occurred on several occasions and wasn't spontaneous.
