Does having children make you happy? Everyone assumed it did until the era of happiness research revealed parents to be a miserable lot. A slew of studies reached the same conclusion: if maximising happiness was your life's aim, stay child-free.

The most famous study, by the Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman, a behavioural economist who surveyed nearly 1000 women, found mothers ranked pleasure in taking care of children below exercising, making meals, watching TV and shopping; and just above housework. Looking after the kids ranked 16th in enjoyment out of 19 suggested activities.
