SELAATA, Lebanon: The Lebanese navy has intercepted three shipping containers of weapons seemingly destined for Syrian rebel forces on board a ship originating from Libya, a security official has said.

The cargo contained machineguns, artillery shells, rockets, rocket launchers and other explosives, the Lebanese official said.

The interception came after the Syrian leadership accused the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, of encouraging terrorists.

The Syrian state newspaper Ath-Thawra wrote that ''[UN envoy] Kofi Annan boasts of the reports of his observers, and Ban Ki-moon can invent any accusation he has been told to, but will they respect their promises and obligations?

''Why don't they request the withdrawal of these terrorists? Why not mention their presence, their role and their supporters and financiers? And the killers who made them and allowed them to infiltrate our streets and exist among us?''

On Saturday Syrian government forces and rebels clashed offshore, reportedly leaving several dead on both sides.

Syrian state media said that an ''armed terrorist group'' in inflatable boats staged an attack on a military unit stationed north of the coastal city of Latakia, about 30 kilometres from the Turkish border.

The coastal fighting further raised the spectre of a prolonged conflict, even as UN monitors tried to calm the unrest in the 13-month uprising.

But the two-week-old cease-fire appeared to have all but fallen apart, with violence continuing throughout much of the country. Of the arms shipment interception, another security officer said the Sierra Leone-flagged Lutfallah II had previously obtained a permit to enter the port of Tripoli in northern Lebanon before being stopped by the navy on Thursday night.

Labelling on one box said it contained fragmentation explosives, and several identified them as coming from Libya, al-Jazeera reported.

The vessel was towed to Selaata, a small port about 50 kilometres north of Beirut.

News reports said the ship had called at the Egyptian port of Alexandria en route from Libya.

A reporter saw three army trucks leave Selaata for Beirut with the seized containers, escorted by eight jeeps and a helicopter.

The security source said the captain and crew had been handed over to military intelligence officers in Tripoli for further questioning. Syrian authorities have repeatedly charged that weapons are being smuggled from Lebanon to rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
