DOCTORS should stop filling their waiting rooms with women's gossip magazines and make them more ''male-friendly'' to encourage men to see their general practitioner, says a health advocate.

Greg Canning, a GP who is involved in lobbying on men's health, said many doctors' surgeries appeared more female-friendly, with magazines and posters aimed at women's health. This was symbolic of the neglect of men's health issues, he said.

Official statistics show that men make about 41 per cent of all visits to GPs and health expenditure on men is about 80 per cent that of women. A leading men's health academic said that doctors' surgeries had an ''understandably feminised atmosphere'' because women were often the primary carers of children.
