Acting Without Principles: The Absurdity of "Intellectual Property Rights"

When governments work together to destroy and steal the property of others, it is not only crime, but crime on the wholesale level. The US government, in collusion with New Zealand's government, closed down the Megaupload site, charging seven executives and arresting four, for what real government crooks have the audacity to call, "piracy." The only pirates were the thugs responsible for destroying the property of millions of innocent individuals who, without warning, have lost access to their property, files they stored on the Megaupload site.

To prove they are nothing but thieves, New Zealand "authorities, on Friday ... seized guns, millions of dollars, and nearly $5 million in luxury cars" from "several homes and businesses linked to the founder of Megaupload.com." That's real theft of real property from individuals, none of whom have been convicted of anything, and some only "linked" to Megaupload.

The "Anonymous" hacker protest that shut down a number of sites supporting the Megaupload shutdown, not only failed to identify the "intellectual property" lie as the basis for the government's thuggery, but engaged in the same kind of thuggery itself. The SOPA and PIPA protests also failed to identify the lie of "intellectual property" as the basis of those oppressive laws.

If you create a machine, a book, a bottle of drugs, or a tube of lipstick, those are property because they physically exist. The design of the machine, the ideas in the book, the formula for the drug, and the process for producing lipstick are not physical, have no material existence, and cannot be property.

Idiot!

The ideas have just been expressed/described in the book with language. An expression of an idea isn't the idea itself.

Come to think of it, language itself is an invention. Can it also be subject to IP?

It's outside of the mind... undergoing a process of materialization, which includes physical description via language... No one goes straight from an idea, to a full blown industrial production process... all the physical steps required for completion, are also outside the mind...

Say, if you invented it, why not... it's your property...

Then those material steps can rightly be property. So, if I start with an idea I didn't originate (non-material) and process it myself, the product is mine.

Is that idea someone's property (IP)?

Or is it just an everyday, garden variety, ordinary idea?

A bare idea isn't physical, hence can't be property (assuming property requires a physical element.)

It's the subsequent processes applied to the idea that are physical.

If it has been, say, put down in writing (IP), it's already physical...

And where/how did you get the idea anyway?

PS. Memo to Nemo: Stop trying to steal other peoples' property...
