TENS of thousands of Syrian protesters marched on the centre of the embattled city of Homs to demand in person that the Arab League take action against the regime of the President, Bashar al-Assad.

In scenes that defied low expectations of the visit to Syria by the league monitoring mission, protesters were filmed shouting at the delegates, even as gunfire could be heard in the background. ''We are unarmed and dying,'' one screamed. ''We are being slaughtered,'' another said.

As observers deployed in flashpoint hubs to implement a peace deal, Syria released 755 prisoners from jail who had been involved in anti-regime unrest, the state broadcaster said.

Releasing prisoners is one of the key conditions of an Arab League roadmap approved by Syria last month to end the country's crisis. The accord also calls for an end to repression of pro-democracy protests. More than 4300 prisoners arrested during a crackdown on regime opponents were released in November, according to Syrian authorities.
