| Never mind the threat from unions, the business sector should worry about the legal industry. Our Fair Work system has given birth to a new breed of lawyer. Describing their work as grubby ambulance chasing is far too kind.
Recent changes have created a ''no win, no pay'' boom in the legal sector. It is now just too profitable to manipulate people into making opportunistic claims. Scrounging off the petty grievances of disgruntled people is a low-grade activity but law firms can't afford not to do it because other income has plummeted. If it wasn't for the Fair Work Act, our legal sector would be suffering a contraction.
There were 266 Australian IR lawyer jobs advertised on seek.com.au one day this month. Before the introduction of the Fair Work Act, legal jobs in the IR arena were relatively rare.
