| AERIAL reconnaissance that gave conservationists their first advantage in the conflict over whaling is said to have revealed beefed-up security on the Japanese fleet this summer.
A squad of men heavily protected by dark paramilitary uniforms has been pictured crouched behind screens on the whalers' security ship Shonan Maru No. 2.
The security men are part of Japan's multimillion-dollar bid to protect the whalers this summer in the expected clash with Sea Shepherd activists.
The conservationists' helicopter shots of Shonan Maru No. 2 and the harpoon ship Yushin Maru revealed defensive measures including anti-boarding nets and spikes. They were taken south-west of Western Australia, where the two Japanese ships are tagging the Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin, which is keeping track of the key factory ship, Nisshin Maru.
