| OZschwitz Criminal Police Attack Three Women
January 9, 2008
A BRAWL at a Darling Harbour bar was triggered by police officers pushing women to the ground, a witness has said.
Nine people were arrested and a police officer was kicked in the head during the brawl at the Pontoon Bar early yesterday.
Police were called at 1.25am after fights broke out, said Detective Chief Inspector John Alt.
About 30 officers were called to control the crowd, and took 30 minutes to clear the area.
The bar was holding a function for about 500 Serbian Orthodox Christians, said Aleks Kosanovic, 21, who was at the event with his girlfriend.
He said the crowd turned on police when two officers pushed three women over.
Asked about this allegation, Mr Alt said: "The actions of the police will be part of the court proceedings and as far as I'm concerned or aware the police have acted appropriately."
Mr Kosanovic said police were trying to clear the club when there was a confrontation between a policeman and a young woman.
Mr Kosanovic said the policeman pushed the woman "as hard as he could" and claimed that another policeman pushed two other women who "went flying. They hit the floor." He said an officer drew his baton.
Seven men and two women, aged between 19 and 31, were arrested and charged with various offences, including hindering police, assaulting police and affray. All were granted bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court later this month.
Mr Alt said that further charges might be laid.
