Correctional Services Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the $22.9 million project would add 112 beds to the jail.
The minister said the use of the modular shipping containers, which have windows, doors and walls added, was groundbreaking. Advertisement: Story continues below
It follows a trial using shipping containers to house inmates at the state's Cadell Prison.
"This is a great outcome for this important project and I was always confident that shipping containers would provide a viable alternative to traditional prison construction," Mr Koutsantonis said.
