| Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers say they have disrupted the operation of an international people-smuggling ring after charging two alleged key players.
The men were arrested in Melbourne on Wednesday following an elaborate undercover operation by the AFP.
Superintendent Stephan Obers said officers had contacted the people smugglers to try to arrange for a fictional Afghan family to be brought to Australia from Indonesia by boat.
"We used undercover operatives to infiltrate and to seek the assistance of the people-smuggling syndicate to bring over a fictitious family," Supt Obers told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday.
He said it would be alleged the syndicate smuggled people from Iran and Iraq into Australia on boats from Indonesia.
