British comedian Ricky Gervais may have caused a stir with his biting and irreverent commentary as host of this year's Golden Globes.

But The Office star could be returning to hosting duties again next year — on a webcast offering an alternative voice-over for the Hollywood awards ceremony.

Gervais has revealed in a new blog for the Wall Street Journal that he is working with a Californian technology company on a "live webcast idea" for the Golden Globes.

"People watch their TV at the same time as listening to me and a few chums provide our own alternative commentary. This is not to steal anyone's thunder, or disrupt pleasant society. It's simply a new horizon. And for its own sake," Gervais said.

He first raised the possibility on his own blog last month, saying he and a few friends would say things "no broadcaster could get away with".

"A live 3-hour podcast during The Golden Globes. Me and a few chums (like Louis CK, Chris Rock, Karl Pilkington, John Stewart, Larry David popping in and out) doing our own alternative commentary," Gervais wrote.

"People at home can have the telly on with the sound down listening to us online say things that no broadcaster could get away with. No one could do a f***ing thing

"The biggest live webcast ever? Who knows? Who cares? What's fun is the sh*t we might come out with. No money. No sponsor. No guide lines. F*** me I can't wait."

Gervais's performance at this year's Golden Globes had members of the A-list audience visibly squirming in their seats, with some US media outlets branding him "merciless" and setting a "corrosive tone".

His material included a gay joke about "some well-known Scientologists", which drew gasps from the audience, while he introduced Robert Downey jnr by saying: "Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail."

Gervais called Bruce Willis "Ashton Kutcher's dad" and explained that hit TV show Lost ended "when the fat one ate them all".

He poked fun at the ages of Sex and the City 2's stars, saying: "I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster."

Notorious Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen also came under fire: "It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast."

Gervais wrote in the Wall Street Journal that awards ceremonies were "boring unless you are winning an award".

"Celebrate yourselves by all means. Take yourselves as seriously as you want and hand each other prizes. But don't televise it unless there's something in it for the viewers. An award show is not a spectator sport. I tried to make it one. I made a choice," he wrote.

"I host the Golden Globes, like some businessmen play golf. For pleasure."

He said he thought he may have burnt his bridges with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at this year's awards.

"Maybe it was the fact that I introduced their president by saying that I'd “just helped him off the toilet and popped his teeth in”? I don't know, but it's their party and they should be able to invite who they want."

Gervais has also recently returned to Twitter after a year-long absence, and has shared a series of unattractive self-portraits.

"FAQ I take my shirt off, mess up my hair and mongify my face especially for those self portraits," @rickygervais tweeted.

He said his partner Jane didn't mind, "except in restaurants".
