Woman shot to death after lunging at barbaric NYPD officers with knife

A knife-wielding woman was shot and killed by cops in front of a midtown women's shelter Sunday night after she lunged toward officers with the blade, police and witnesses said.

The homeless woman, who police believe is in her 50s, got into a spat with another woman inside New Providence Women's Shelter on 45th St. near Second Ave. about 8:30 p.m., police and witnesses said.

The woman, clutching a knife, went outside, where two uniformed officers ordered her to drop the blade, cops and witnesses said. She ignored the commands and lunged toward the cops, who shot her, police sources said.

She was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition last night, but died later.

Betty Saunders, 58, who lives at the shelter, said the women - who other residents said were a couple - began arguing on the second floor.

"One of the women grabbed a knife," Saunders said. "She ended up in the middle of the street. The police said, 'Please put the knife down.' She didn't. They shot her five times."

The officers were not injured but were taken to a local hospital for trauma.
