| Subject: Funny: Germans should take over Greece Sat Oct 01, 2011 5:54 pm | |
| Nobody seems to have thought of this, but the obvious solution to the financial crisis rocking Europe and the world is for the Germans to take over Greece.
They should move in and run the show, like a corporate administrator sorting out a bankrupt business.
It is sadly true that while the Greeks invented both democracy and economics in the 5th century BC, the descendants of Solon, Pericles and Socrates have made a frightful hash of things ever since. If the prudent and industrious Germans have to stump up a few squillion euros to sort out the mess, surely they are entitled to say how their money is spent.
It would need to be handled carefully, of course, with due regard to history.
Germany's last involvement in Greek affairs, exactly 70 years ago, was what you might call a mixed success. This time around there should be no panzer divisions storming south through the Monastir Gap. Angela Merkel is no Helen of Troy, not the face to launch a thousand schiffs. Griechenland Allgemeine Gesellschaft is what we are talking here, Greece as a corporate subsidiary managed from head office in Berlin. Things would be back in order quick smart.
The tourist industry could stay pretty much as is. There will always be a demand for those frocked and stockinged Evzone guards outside the presidential palace in Athens, for lilting bouzoukis in vine-clad tavernas, for nut-brown fisher folk slurping ouzo through soup-strainer moustaches in picturesque Aegean harbours.
But, even there, improvements can be made. The Acropolis has been a ruin for years, all those chunks of old marble carelessly tumbled about. It would not take much to renovate the Parthenon, much as the Brandenburg Gate was rebuilt after 1945. Perhaps with a few Bauhaus flourishes and a bierkeller for added interest.
Time is of the essence. Schnell, schnell, there is not a moment to lose.
