THE rate at which police draw their firearms has not decreased over the past four years despite growing use of stun guns, new figures show.

According to figures provided by the government, the number of times police officers used their firearms since Tasers were issued in October 2008 has been consistent, at about 800 times a year.

Tasers were used 407 times in 2009 and 1169 times last year. The figures for both include times they were drawn but not fired.

''When police began using stun guns in 2008 they were … a preferable alternative than the use of firearms,'' the Greens MP David Shoebridge said.

''If stun guns were genuinely being used in place of firearms, then police use of firearms would be decreasing.''

Last month Mr Shoebridge called on the state government to revise its guidelines on Taser use to instruct police against taking aim at the chest after a 17-year-old boy in the US died after being shot with a stun gun.

The current guidelines advise to aim for the back and avoid the head. Otherwise, they should aim for the lower torso, avoiding the face or groin. Nothing in the guidelines instructs police to avoid the chest area.
