| First HMAS Sydney wreck photos released
The first dramatic pictures of have been released by the search team that found the wrecks of the lost Australian warship HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran.
The two ships destroyed each other in a ferocious battle of the West Australian coast on November 19, 1941 - all 645 of Sydney's crew died, but 317 from those aboard Kormoran survived.
The pictures released today by finding the Finding Sydney Foundation were taken nearly 2.5 kilometres below the surface of the ocean.
They show the devastating metal damage suffered by the Sydney, including one wrecked gun turret, which had been destroyed by a German shell, and wreckage strewn across the cruiser's superstructure.
The pictures add to the incredible tale of what is Australia's greatest naval tragedy- not one member of the warship's crew survived.
