INDONESIA on Monday said it expects US studios to end their boycott and resume distributing Hollywood blockbusters to the country under a new deal to end a damaging tax dispute.

Officials said a new tax regime for foreign films had been agreed last week in response to Hollywood protests over an attempt to charge studios more to screen films in Indonesian cinemas.

'Under new regulations, we hope it will be profitable for the US studios to continue screening their films here,' culture and tourism ministry official Ukus Kuswara said.

'We hope the box office hits can be brought in as soon as possible, that the cinemas will be filled again and the movie-lovers can enjoy their movies. It's a win-win solution for all.'

Since the studios began boycotting the country in February, Indonesian movie lovers have missed out on blockbusters including Black Swan, True Grit and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Cinema takings plunged by 60 to 70 per cent as theatres desperately filled the gap with local productions and obscure foreign fare such as Elite Squad, a Portuguese film from 2007.
