| Subject: Via Ancaps: Fancy your own fort or palace? India is selling them off Sat Apr 09, 2011 1:16 am | |
| Thousands of India's finest homes, from grand palaces to historic forts, are for sale, writes Jason Burke.
If you ever fancied owning a fort in Rajasthan, now is your chance. The government of the western Indian state is putting thousands of properties on sale. But be warned, the competition for the best of the 100-room palaces and fairytale castles will be steep. Your rival bidder is likely to be the original owner - or at least a descendant.
Properties include a fort at Madhorajpura near the pink city of Jaipur with a starting price of £650,000 ($1 million). For those on a budget, there are merchants' family houses from the 18th and 19th centuries for less than £15,000 - though some are a little the worse for wear.
