| TWO of the biggest hotels in NSW will be forced to lock their doors early under a plan released by the area's Mayor to ban late-night hotel entry to slash alcohol-related problems.
Less than a week after 15 hotels in Newcastle were ordered to refuse entry to drinkers after 1am, the Mayor of Randwick, Bruce Notley-Smith, announced he wanted similar orders made against the Coogee Bay Hotel and the nearby Beach Palace Hotel.
In a mayoral minute to the council on Tuesday night, Councillor Notley-Smith said the council and the police would make a joint submission to the NSW director of Liquor Gaming and Racing to impose a "lockout" at the two hotels when the new Liquor Act took effect on July 1.
The move was intended to end problems that go back more than eight years, where hundreds of people come to Coogee in the early hours of the morning to drink at the Coogee Bay Hotel, which closes at 6am, and the Palace, which closes at 3am.
He said there was an "undeniable link between late-trading premises and late-night disturbances, damage to private and public property, street crime, antisocial behaviour and violence both inside and outside of late-trading venues".
