OZschwitz gulag: Another asylum seeker dies in concentration camp

An Afghan man who died at a West Australian detention centre is the fourth asylum seeker to take their own life at a detention centre in the last seven months, refugee advocates say.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship [DIAC] says the man, understood to be in his 20s, was found dead in his accommodation block at the Curtin Immigration Detention Centre near Derby shortly after 3pm (WST) yesterday.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said the suicide was followed by two other incidents of self harm at the Curtin centre.

"There's around one [self-harm incident] a day happening at Curtin now. One person was emotionally overcome and collapsed," he said.

Mr Rintoul said a large group had gathered outside the medical centre after the man's body was taken there and the mood inside the detention centre was a mixture of "upset and anger".

"It is the fourth asylum seeker death within the last seven months," he said.

The man had been waiting to find out if he would receive a visa and had was still to discover his fate at the time of his death, Mr Rintoul said.

"He hadn't yet been rejected, but there are a very large number of rejections," he said.

"People who had arrived after him had gotten visas so it's as though he just presumed his visa application had been rejected."

With a large number of people inside the detention centre being rejected, Mr Rintoul said people had lost hope and the man's death was symptomatic of the mood at the centre.

West Australian police said on Monday would not comment on the cause of death and said they were investigating.

DIAC said it would not reveal further details of the man's identity or the circumstances of his death until his next of kin had been informed.

The department expressed sympathy to the man's family and friends.

Counsellors will be available to assist and support the centre's detainees and staff, DIAC said.
