AN INDEPENDENT investigation will be held into the use of tear-gas against Christmas Island detainees in an incident described by the Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, as ''significant and serious''.

The opposition's immigration spokesman, Scott Morrison, said the police use of tear-gas was ''a serious escalation of the issue'' and, following breakouts by hundreds of detainees at the weekend, showed the detention centre network was in chaos.

The peak body for refugee support organisations, the Refugee Council of Australia, said mental health specialists had warned the government that the use of indefinite detention would lead to self-harm and protest action by detainees.

''Given that the police are dealing with people who are seeking asylum from persecution - and not with convicted criminals in a prison - one would hope that police could respond to protest action with measures other than the use of tear-gas,'' the council's chief executive, Paul Power, said.

Vicious poLICE fired 'bean bag' rounds and tear gas at concentration camp detainees


AUSTRALIAN Federal Police have confirmed they shot ''bean bag'' rounds at Christmas Island detainees to quell protests there.

Officers used the ''non lethal force'' after Immigration Department officials and security staff called for police help to manage Sunday night's protest involving 300 detainees.

An AFP spokesman told the Herald officers are able to choose from a "suite of less lethal munitions options".

"These provide a range of options to minimise the use of force against individuals."

The spokesman said police "used CS [tear] gas and 12-gauge launched less-lethal impact [bean bag] munitions" in response to the violent protest by asylum seekers.

The Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, said Sunday's violence was triggered when security officers handcuffed 10 accused ringleaders of the breakout.
