A Brisbane employer ordered to pay almost half a million dollars in compensation after a worker fell off her chair has lost an appeal to have the matter re-tried.

Benita Taylor was left with a tail bone injury in May 2008 after she went to sit down at her desk but found her chair had rolled away due to an "extremely, extremely slippery" plastic mat her employer had insisted she place on the carpet under her seat.

Ms Taylor, 41, successfully sued her former employer, scientific and medical distribution company In Vitro Technologies, at Cleveland, in Brisbane's east and was awarded $420,000 in compensation.

The company lodged an appeal seeking to have the claim dismissed or the amount of damages reduced. Alternatively, it sought a new trial, claiming the judge had not provided sufficient reasons for awarding in Ms Taylor's favour.
