| THE war against parking meters at Balmoral Beach had been raging for weeks when, in the dying days of 2009, someone vandalised the padlocks on their protective steel covers.
Using fluorescence microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and pyrolysis gas chromatography, a police forensics officer identified the substance injected into the locks: superglue.
But the culprit's identity remains a mystery, after a long-time Balmoral resident, Ian Elsegood, 56, was found not guilty yesterday of 16 counts of malicious damage.
''I knew the whole time I wasn't guilty,'' Mr Elsegood, who manages his family's textile fashion house, said yesterday. ''But it's nice not to be caught up in a big machine that you have no control over.''
