A pigeon that was carrying 45 grams of illicit drugs into a prison was found by police a few metres away from the jail in the northern Colombian city of Bucaramanga.

The find exposed a drug transport method even the authorities described as ''clever''.

The Bucaramanga police commander, Jose Mendoza, said the pigeon was carrying 40 grams of marijuana and 5 grams of bazuco (a cheap mix of freebase cocaine and other substances) to the Modelo prison.

The bird was unable to reach its goal because of the added weight and it tired and fell to the ground outside. Prison officers watching the area realised the pigeon was in trouble and had gone to its aid.

They then noticed that a number of small packages had been tied to its wings.

Mr Mendoza said it was not the first time that pigeon couriers had been recruited by criminals. The authorities recently found one bird that carried mobile phone cards into a maximum security prison in the central Colombian province of Boyaca, he said.
