| An affair is the classic response to a man's midlife crisis, but Tony Davis wonders if there isn't a better solution.
The Australian male's median age (36.9 years) is approaching the halfway point of his life expectancy (79.3 years), according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The lesson is clear: if you're in that huge bulge of males about to start the second half of your allocated three score-and-nineteen-point-three years, it's probably best to plan your midlife crisis ahead. Otherwise you won't beat the rush.
When Canadian psychoanalyst Dr Elliott Jaques coined the phrase "midlife crisis" in the 1960s, he connected it strongly with "having to accept the reality of one's death". Advertisement: Story continues below
Not all men have a midlife crisis, nor does everyone agree on exactly what it is. But there's little doubt many men go through a period of transition, introspection, depression or, pathetically perhaps, a desperate last spate of bravado and risk-taking.
