| The US Capitol and nearby buildings were evacuated yesterday when controllers lost contact with a flight headed into restricted airspace over Washington because the pilot switched to the wrong radio frequency, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration attributed the lost contact to "pilot read-back error," said Diane Spitaliere, an FAA spokeswoman.
Piedmont Airlines Flight 4352 from Hilton Head, South Carolina, lost radio contact as it approached Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, prompting the North American Aerospace Defense Command to scramble fighter jets from Andrews Air Force Base. The airport is less than five miles southwest of the Capitol and House and Senate office buildings, which also were ordered evacuated.
