For the first time in the history of medicine, a man has been officially declared "cured' of HIV. Timothy Ray Brown, 42 of Germany, underwent intensive treatment for another pressing health issue - acute myeloid leukemia - and was nearly killed by the stem cell transplant that ultimately cured him.

In 2007, Brown sought the care of Germany's Charite Universitatmedizin Berlin hospital for the cancer, which he thought posed a more immediate threat than the HIV, which with modern medicine is pretty manageable.

Brown underwent chemotherapy that destroyed the majority of his immune cells, and went through total body irradiation. Lastly, he had a risky stem cell transplant that about one-third of patients don't survive. The stem cell transplant appears to have completely cured him of HIV.
