| Subject: Attorney Jailed for Not Reciting Pledge of Allegiance Thu Oct 07, 2010 7:23 pm | |
| Not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance when ordered can land a defiant attorney in jail in the courtroom of Mississippi Judge Talmadge Littlejohn. Attorney David Lampley spent 5 hours behind bars for contempt of court yesterday after not reciting the pledge, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports. Witnesses said the attorney rose when Littlejohn asked the room to stand and recite the pledge, but failed to say the words, infuriating the judge.
Lampley "rose and was respectful, but did not recite the pledge," according to legal blog NMissCommentator, which notes that Lampley worked with the ACLU on a controversial school prayer case in the '90s. The judge's order stated that Lampley shall "purge himself of said criminal contempt by complying with the order of this court by standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in open court." It's not clear whether the attorney complied.
